The Iowa Association of Business and Industry joins national business, manufacturing and union leaders in decrying President Barack Obama's rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline. The project, which according to the Institute for 21st Century Energy would have created 42,000 jobs, would have added billions of dollars to U.S. GDP over the course of the next several years. Millions of those dollars would have gone to Iowa manufacturing companies. As noted by National Association of Manufacturers President Jay Timmons and Laborers' International Union of North America General President Terry O'Sullivan, the project "...would create thousands of long-term jobs and advance North American energy security." The project deserved to move foreward and American workers and taxpayers are worse off because it did not.

October 5, 2015

eschettler@iowaabi.org

Iowa Caucus Toolkit a go-to resource for Iowans

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI), in coordination with Economic Progress for Iowa’s Citizens (EPIC) has launched a new online resource to help Iowans prepare for the 2016 caucuses.

The Iowa Caucus Toolkit, available at caucus.iavotes.com, features step-by-step instructional videos on how to participate in the Democratic and Republican caucuses as well as historical information and resources employers and others can use to encourage participation.

This nonpartisan resource was created in partnership with the Business-Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC) with input from both the Iowa Democratic Party and the Republican Party of Iowa.

ABI and its members believe it is important for more Iowans to participate in the election process, and the Iowa Caucus Toolkit is the latest in a series of initiatives to help increase civic engagement.

“The Iowa caucuses are unlike any other election activity and it can be intimidating, especially for first-time participants,” ABI President Mike Ralston said. “The Iowa Caucus Toolkit is designed to help Iowans understand the caucus process so they feel confident when they head to their caucus site on February 1.”

“BIPAC is proud to partner with ABI and EPIC to increase political participation by employers and employees in the Hawkeye State,” said Jim Gerlach, president and chief executive officer of BIPAC. “The Iowa Caucus Toolkit does not tell Iowans how to vote, but educates them about the processes of the Republican and Democratic caucuses and motivates them to participate so they can make their voices heard.”

To help drive engagement, ABI has been working with candidates to coordinate visits with member companies and their employees and participates in a variety of initiatives including Employee Voter Registration Week and the Caucus Consortium Advisory Committee.

###

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) has been the voice of Iowa business since 1903, and its mission is to collectively provide a strong, unified voice to business and industry on issues affecting Iowa employers. ABI is comprised of approximately 1,500 Iowa members of all types and sizes in all 99 counties employing more than 310,000 Iowans.

Since 1963, the Business-Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC) has guided business through the political process. Today, BIPAC functions as the engine behind America’s largest grassroots business network assisting companies and associations with communications to employee/retiree voters about elections, candidates, and issues. Learn more at: www.BIPAC.org.

Economic Progress for Iowa’s Citizens (EPIC) is a not-for-profit entity founded in 1991 by a number of businesses and statewide business associations. EPIC is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to research and the dissemination of data on the attitudes of Iowa's citizens, legislators, and legislative candidates on matters affecting business. While EPIC believes that Iowa and its citizens will benefit from a "pro-business" environment, EPIC neither endorses nor opposes any candidate for public office. EPIC does encourage the electorate to become informed by publicizing issues and factual information on those issues, and to be active participants in the political process.

Wersen receives ABI Advocacy in Action Award

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry is pleased to present its 2015 Advocacy in Action award to Bob Wersen for his work to advance ABI’s public policy agenda. The award was presented during the Advanced Manufacturing Conference on Sept. 30.

Wersen is the president of Interpower, an Oskaloosa-based company that manufactures power cords, cord sets and other electrical components. He serves on the ABI Board of Directors and is a past chairman of ABI and the ABI Foundation.

The Advocacy in Action award was created in 2014 to recognize ABI members’ commitments to ABI advocacy efforts.

Wersen became an Iowan by choice in 1993 when he moved his business to Iowa from California, where the state’s tax and regulatory climate were stifling Interpower’s growth.

Wersen has been a vocal advocate for Iowa business issues over the past 22 years, inviting legislators to visit his facility to discuss the importance of policy decisions that drive economic growth and add jobs. He takes part in ABI’s annual Legislative Reception and Business Day on the Hill events, and regularly contributes to ABI’s Iowa Industry PAC at the platinum level.

“Bob and his wife, Sharman, could have moved anywhere in the U.S., and we are fortunate they chose Iowa,” said ABI President Mike Ralston. “Bob has been a vocal advocate for smart business policies and economic growth as well as an integral component of ABI’s overall success.”

In addition to Interpower, the Wersens own and operate Tassel Ridge Winery in Leighton.

Photos of the award presentation are available upon request. Contact eschettler@iowaabi.org.

COALTION URGES TIMELY IUB REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF PIPELINE PROJECT

Members Voice Concern Regarding Activist Obstruction of Review Process

DES MOINES – Members of the Midwest Alliance for Infrastructure Now (MAIN) gathered Thursday to stress the importance of not politicizing the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) review of the Dakota Access Pipeline in light of ongoing obstructionism and delay tactics deployed by activists. A diverse group of labor, business, and agricultural supporters offered the following statements in response to the latest effort to upend the IUB process and stand in the way of economic development, job creation, and energy security.

“For months, opponents of this project have attempted to derail progress – and cost our members the jobs they need to support families – by spouting inaccuracies, downplaying economic benefit, and otherwise attempting to distract from the vital importance of this project,” said Bill Gerhard, President of the Iowa State Building & Construction Trades Council. “Members of the labor community, as well as the state at large, simply have too much at stake to allow this type of activism to stand in the way of a good thing. We urge the IUB to approve this project in a timely manner and let our people get to work.”

“Infrastructure projects on this scale create tens of thousands of jobs and inject billions into our economy,” added Mike Ralston, President of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI). “In order for our state to continue to attract investment on this scale, we need a stable and predictable business landscape that’s not held hostage by opposition activists. Our state needs Dakota Access, and we need to continue to encourage projects like it to look our way in years to come.”

“There’s no question that a project of this size and scope requires thorough debate and a clear hearing of the facts on both sides of the argument. That should be the core of the IUB’s review process,” said Ed Wiederstein, chairman of the Midwest Alliance for Infrastructure Now and former President of the Iowa Farm Bureau. “Obstructionism, inflammatory rhetoric, and delay tactics are just attempts to distract from a true debate. This project deserves our support the name of greater energy security, more affordable crude oil and petroleum products, and safe transport of a domestic resource that we all use every day.”

The Iowa Utilities Board will hold a hearing to further examine the Dakota Access Pipeline later this year.

About MAIN: The Midwest Alliance for Infrastructure Now (MAIN) is a partnership of entities from agriculture, business, and labor sectors aimed at supporting the economic development and energy security benefits associated with infrastructure projects in the Midwest.

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) Foundation is pleased to announce that 39 Iowans graduated from the renowned Leadership Iowa program during the recent annual ABI Taking Care of Business Conference in the Quad Cities.

Leadership Iowa has been the state’s premier issues-awareness program for 33 years. The program is designed to instill passion in current and emerging leaders while fostering a high level of civic engagement. The 2014-15 class attended an integrated series of monthly two-day sessions from October through June at various locations throughout Iowa. They learned from experts about government, economic development, community vitality and advanced manufacturing.

“ABI and the ABI Foundation proudly present the Leadership Iowa program because each of the past 33 years we’ve identified many of our state’s best leaders and helped to equip them with the knowledge and tools to make a difference in our state,” said Mike Ralston, ABI President and a 1991 graduate of Leadership Iowa.

Since its inception in 1982, Leadership Iowa has graduated more than 1,000 individuals from both the private and public sector, representing each geographical region of Iowa. Each year, approximately 40 talented individuals are selected from a large applicant pool based on achieving the best balance of qualified candidates for a particular year.

###

The ABI Foundation’s mission is to build partnerships between business, education and communities. As a nonprofit organization created by Iowa ABI, the foundation also provides resources and forms that develop professional and personal responsibility and leadership for our communities and our state.
The Iowa Association of Business and Industry joins state leaders, manufacturers and business organizations from across the country supporting the passage of Trade Promotion Authority and authorization of new trade opportunities to promote job growth in Iowa.

Whether they sell their products throughout the state, throughout the country or around the world, Iowa manufacturers of all sizes are competing in a global economy. That is why it is critical to provide the tools necessary to open overseas markets and pursue the kind of robust trade policies and agreements that help grow manufacturing.

“Manufacturing plays a critical role in Iowa’s economy – accounting for more than 217,000 jobs throughout the state.
Participants will interact with professionals, get helpful tips from corporate leaders and meet other students from across the state.
Students may apply by downloading an application online at www.businesshorizonsiowa.org and submitting it to the ABI Foundation by mail, email or fax.
Elevate Iowa Offers $7,500 in Scholarships at Iowa's Community Colleges

High School Seniors Pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Careers Encouraged to Apply

DES MOINES – Elevate Iowa is offering $7,500 in scholarships to Iowa high school students interested in studying a manufacturing-related career at one of Iowa’s 15 Community Colleges. One scholarship will be made per college.

“Manufacturing firms supply more than 208,000 jobs to Iowans,” says Mike Ralston, president of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. “These well-paying careers require education and training beyond high school but often don’t require the burdensome cost of a bachelor’s degree. Recent studies have shown that two-year degree holders, especially in high-demand manufacturing occupations, can earn salaries that surpass those of four-year college graduates.”

Examples of scholarship-eligible training programs include Welding, Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Machining, Industrial Automation, Industrial Maintenance, Robotics, and Tool and Die.

In addition to a $500 scholarship, Elevate Iowa scholarship recipients will be recognized at an event this fall, which will honor and celebrate the contributions of Iowa’s manufacturing leaders. Winners also will receive admission to Iowa’s Advanced Manufacturing Conference on Sept. 30, 2015.

Interested candidates should apply by completing the application found at www.elevateiowa.com.

###

Elevate Iowa (www.elevateiowa.com) is a statewide, integrated marketing campaign to promote careers and educational pathways in advanced manufacturing. The initiative is directed by a coalition of all 15 Iowa Community Colleges represented by the Iowa-Advanced Manufacturing (I-AM) Consortium, the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, the private manufacturing sector and the State of Iowa. The initiative is funded in part by the I-AM Consortium, which is 100% financed by a grant from the Department of Labor’s Employment & Training Administration. Elevate Iowa offers resources to the public specifically targeting those eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for workers, unemployed/underemployed Iowans, U.S. veterans, along with K-12 students and their families.

Governor Branstad Highlights Iowa Businesses Tuesday
with Proclamation Signing

DES MOINES – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) are honored to be part of Governor Terry Branstad’s proclamation signing tomorrow as he highlights the importance of Iowa businesses and honors the contribution that the thousands of entrepreneurs in our state make to the economic vitality of our communities.

“The Governor sees how essential Iowa businesses are to the state’s economy and wants to be sure to recognize them at the statewide level by proclaiming March 10th as Iowa Business Day,” said NFIB Iowa State Director Kristin Failor. “There are many elected officials that use the business community for campaigning and then quickly forget to govern with the same rhetoric. We are so fortunate to have a governor who has not forgotten the important contribution that our members make to the state.”

According to the proclamation, the state of Iowa has more than 80,000 businesses, which employ more than 1.2 million Iowans.

“We are proud to celebrate Iowa businesses and the contributions they make to our local economy and community tomorrow with Governor Branstad,” ABI President Mike Ralston said. “Supporting local businesses means helping to create jobs and boosting both the municipal and state economy. Iowa business leaders take pride in their companies’ contributions to their local communities.”

The Proclamation will be signed in the Governor’s formal office at 11:00 am Tuesday in collaboration with a day of scheduled activities at the capitol highlighting the business community and enlightening lawmakers to the regulatory and fiscal issues that plague many of Iowa’s business owners.

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry and the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce are introducing a new initiative that will increase value to Urbandale Chamber members while expanding ABI’s membership to allow for greater communication with small businesses.

The ABI/Urbandale Chamber Alliance will begin in January and provide an affiliate ABI membership for all Urbandale Chamber members with fewer than 25 employees. As members, those businesses will receive discounted rates to ABI events, access to grassroots advocacy tools, ABI government relations services and expanded statewide business networking and educational opportunities.

“The Urbandale Chamber of Commerce is very excited about our new partnership with ABI,” said John Irving, director of business development at Baker Electric and 2014 Urbandale Chamber of Commerce President. “A member can use the programming, educational and networking opportunities for both organizations to help their own companies grow and build their brand.”

For ABI, the alliance offers an opportunity reach an audience that will benefit from the programming and advertising ABI offers but may not have the funds in their current budget or time to invest in the organization.

“Businesses with fewer than 20 employees make up 85 percent of Iowa’s employment base. This is an incredibly important segment of Iowa’s business population. We want them to have a voice in statewide business issues as well as access to programs and services that will help them compete globally,” said Leisa Fox, senior vice president for revenue and programs.

The ABI/Urbandale Chamber Alliance is serving as a pilot program that could be rolled out to other chamber organizations throughout the state at a later date.

ABI’s PAC endorses Pate, Clovis as Friends of Iowa Business

The Iowa Association of Business’s Iowa Industry PAC (IIPAC) has endorsed Paul Pate in his campaign for Secretary of State and Sam Clovis in his campaign for State Treasurer.

IIPAC evaluates candidates based on their support for a competitive business climate with a focus on creating Iowa jobs. Criteria used to make the designations include the candidates’ positions on issues based on questionnaire responses as well as interviews with members of IIPAC Board. The selections are made by the IIPAC board, which is made of 11 bipartisan ABI members from across Iowa.

“Paul Pate and Sam Clovis have demonstrated a commitment to improving Iowa’s business and regulatory climate so that employers can create more jobs and grow the economy,” ABI President Michael Ralston said.

ABI is comprised of more than 1,400 companies that employ more than 300,000 Iowans. As "The Voice of Iowa Business Since 1903", ABI works to enhance the Iowa business climate to foster growth and prosperity for all Iowans.

IIPAC is non-partisan and endorses both Republican and Democratic candidates for legislative and statewide offices. The committee encourages voters to consider the endorsements when evaluating which candidates will focus on economic issues and help bring jobs to Iowa when voting this November.

IIPAC also announces statewide and legislative Friends of Iowa Business endorsements

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry’s Political Action Committee, representing 1,400 businesses employing more than 300,000 people, has endorsed Iowa Governor Terry Branstad in his bid for re-election.

Governor Branstad’s record of growing Iowa’s economy, creating new jobs and keeping jobs in our state were key factors in the Iowa Industry Political Action Committee (IIPAC) board’s decision to designate him a Friend of Iowa Business. The IIPAC board is a group of 11 bipartisan ABI members from across Iowa.

“Governor Branstad has proven once again his ability to lead the state out of challenging financial times and to a budget surplus. Governor Branstad’s focus on educating Iowa’s future workforce and keeping businesses in Iowa makes him the clear choice to receive the Friend of Iowa Business endorsement,” IIPAC Chairman Kirk Tyler said.

Governor Branstad is running for his sixth term as Iowa Governor. Bill Northey, who is running for his third term as Secretary of Agriculture, and Mary Mosiman, who is seeking her first full term as State Auditor, also received Friend of Iowa Business designations. IIPAC also endorsed Adam Gregg in the race for Iowa’s State Attorney General.

“As chairman of the state’s largest and oldest business organization, I am pleased the candidates the IIPAC board has selected are focused on jobs and making Iowa a better place to live and work. Our goal at ABI is to help foster the type of climate in Iowa that will keep people here,” ABI Chairman Mark Hanawalt said.

ABI also endorsed candidates for the Legislature. IIPAC conducts in-person candidate interviews, reviews questionnaires and takes into consideration candidates’ voting records and positions on business issues when endorsing Friends of Iowa Business.

Fifteen Iowa Libraries and Museums Receive Grants to Help “Elevate” Advanced Manufacturing

For Immediate Release – July 29, 2014

Elevate Advanced Manufacturing, a statewide outreach campaign to promote careers and training in advanced manufacturing, has announced that 15 public libraries and museums will receive funds to implement programming that educates young people and their parents about the varied career opportunities in advanced manufacturing.

“Dirty Jobs television star Mike Rowe emphasized during his recent visit to Cedar Rapids that Iowa has a lot of really great, high paying jobs in advanced manufacturing,” said Mike Ralston, President of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. “These jobs promise great futures for our young people, both because they pay well and because they provide a great quality of life in Iowa communities.”

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, in 2011 the average manufacturing worker made $77,060 annually including pay and benefits, while the average worker in other industries earned $60,168.

Despite the high paying jobs, however, Iowa is experiencing a workforce shortage that is preventing Iowa companies from meeting industry demand for their products. By 2018, in fact, the projection is that there will be a shortage of 6,678 skilled workers in Iowa.1 “These threats to our Iowa companies also threaten our communities and our state from an economic development perspective,” said Paul Gregoire, Vice President, Global Human Resources for Emerson Process Management in Marshalltown.

School Counselor Karin Leveke, of Humboldt Elementary Schools, explained that most kids are simply not exposed to the kinds of jobs that are in high demand today. “Kids know what their parents do for work; they have experience with teachers and doctors; and they know what they see around them in their communities or on television: police, fire fighters, construction workers. We have to work to expose them to other careers and as a school counselor, I feel responsible for doing so, particularly if students have the aptitudes to pursue careers where they can earn a great living wage without incurring a lot of educational debt in the process.”

“Advanced manufacturing is not just for people who like to ‘work with their hands’,” said Lori Schaefer-Weaton, President of Agri-Industrial Plastics in Fairfield, Iowa. “It’s for people who can think critically and who have great problem solving skills. It’s also for those of us who want to leave at the end of a day knowing we’ve done an honest day’s work and that we have helped create a product that people need. Our employees also feel good knowing that their work contributes not only to their own family’s livelihood but to the health of their communities.”

One of the ways Elevate exposes kids to careers in advanced manufacturing is by supporting public libraries and museums’ efforts integrate hands-on creative activities into their programming. “Elevate goes wonderfully along with other STEM initiatives that libraries like ours are engaged with,” Beth Reineke, Assistant Director of the Estherville Public Library. “We have great support from our area manufacturers whose employees will be volunteering their time to help our young patrons with their projects.”

The following is the list of libraries and the projects their $500.00 grant will support:

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry on Wednesday released its voting records for the 2013-14 85th General Assembly.

The records, which are based on economic and business issues, are valuable tools for Iowans as they prepare for the Nov. 4 election.

Fifty-one state representatives and 15 senators compiled a 100 percent ABI voting record.

“We want to thank these legislators who regularly vote for policies that promote job growth,” ABI President Mike Ralston said. “It is important during this election year that we continue to advocate for candidates who remember that it is all about jobs.”

ABI scores lawmakers on how they vote on key bills and amendments affecting Iowa’s business climate. Key votes are based on ABI’s 2013-14 legislative priorities and policies established by the association’s 1,400 members.

Highlights from the voting records include legislators’ stances on substantive property tax reform measures, a restoration of the tax credit cap, military employment and protecting employers from increased legal fees.

ABI joins other Iowa business, manufacturing and agriculture leaders in call for immigration reform

DES MOINES, IA -- The Partnership for a New American Economy, American Farm Bureau Federation, Business Roundtable, AmericanHort, Western Growers, and the National Association of Manufacturers today urged Congress and the administration to work together to enact immigration reform during a Day of Action with events in Washington, DC and in more than 60 congressional districts across 25 states.

Concurrent to a national press conference in Washington, DC, a tele-press conference was hosted in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional district in Des Moines. The event featured remarks from Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham, Greater Des Moines Partnership CEO Jay Byers, and Iowa Chamber Alliance Executive Director John Stineman. The event was co-sponsored by the Iowa Chamber Alliance, the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, the Iowa Business Council, the Greater Des Moines Partnership and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

“It is vitally important for Congress and the Administration to modernize our broken immigration system to reflect today’s realities and address the current and future workforce needs of our economy,” said Jay Byers, CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. “To remain globally competitive, we need to be able to attract top talent from across the world to help fuel our future economic growth.”

“Attracting, developing, and retaining a world-class workforce is critical to ensuring the continued vitality of Iowa commerce,” said Elliott Smith, Executive Director of the Iowa Business Council. “A growing, dynamic population is the keystone to vibrant economic growth, thriving school districts, healthy government coffers, and the increased the competitiveness of academic institutions, industries, and the innovation process. Without meaningful immigration reform, the future success of Iowa’s market-leading enterprises is truly at risk.”

"Let me stress again that Iowa manufacturers and business people see this as a workforce issue," said Mike Ralston, President of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. "Action has been put off for too long and we urge Congress to act now to reform U.S. immigration laws."

“Agriculture contributes more than $100 billion each year to the U.S. economy. In 2012, labor shortages on farms led to $3.3 billion in missed GDP growth and $1.3 billion in lost farm income,” said Craig Hill, President of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. “Immigration reform is critical to ensure a reliable and competent workforce for our nation’s agricultural industry and the U.S. economy.”

“Reforming the U.S. immigration system needs to be addressed by Congress and the Administration and the businesses and farmers that drive Iowa’s economy aren’t going to go away until it is solved,” said John Stineman, Executive Director of the Iowa Chamber Alliance. “The voters of Iowa agree: they know the system is broken, they want to see Washington take action and they want them to do it sooner rather than later and quit making excuses.”

In conjunction with the National Day of Action, three business advocacy organizations, the Partnership for a New American Economy, the Business Roundtable and the National Association of Manufacturers, released new opinion survey findings showing strong support among voters in 26 states and nationally for immigration reform. These results were released in conjunction with a National Day of Action for Immigration Reform that included a Washington DC press conference and events in more than 60 key districts across 25 states. Findings for the survey of Iowa voters include:

Voters across Iowa recognize the immigration system is broken: By a 9 to 1 ratio, voters believe the system is in need of fixing versus those who think the system is functioning the way it should. 90% of Republicans believe Congress should take action to fix the immigration system. 81% of Independents agree.

Voters overwhelmingly reject argument that President's unwillingness to enforce laws is grounds not to pass immigration reform. 2 out of 3 voters reject the argument that the Administration's unwillingness to enforce laws is a reason for Congress not to act. 3 out of 5 Republicans reject this argument as well. That number is 57% among Independents

Voters don’t want Washington to wait to fix the immigration system. 75% of voters want Congress to act this year, with more than half calling it "very important" they act this year. 74% of Republicans say it is important that Congress act, while 49% say it is very important. 70% of Independents believe it is important for Congress to act this year.

Voters support the principles outlined by House leadership. 66% of voters support the basic immigration plan laid out in Speaker Boehner's "immigration standards". 58% of Republicans support an immigration reform plan that secures our borders, expands visas for high-skill workers and farm workers, provides an employer verification program, allows young persons brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents an opportunity to earn citizenship, and provides visas to live and work here legally to undocumented immigrants without a criminal record who pay penalties and back taxes. Only 37% oppose. Among Independents, 61% support and only 32% oppose.

Voters support establishing a legal status for undocumented immigrants. More than 2/3 of voters support legal status for undocumented immigrants. A majority of Republicans (63%) support legal status

Republicans want their next presidential candidate to support immigration reform: Republicans would rather vote for a presidential candidate in 2016 that is from a party that supports reform (68%) than one from a party that opposes it (16%).

“Behind all the noise and rhetoric is an American electorate looking for leaders unafraid to tackle immigration reform,” said Brock McCleary, President, Harper Polling, Inc.

The Iowa Interactive Voice Response (IVR) automated telephone survey was conducted by Harper Polling, Inc between June 29th and June 30th, and surveyed samples size was 551. The margin of error was 4.17%. The total percentages for responses may not equal 100 percent due to rounding. Specific complete polling results available here.

# # #

About the National Day of Action for Immigration Reform

Today, a coalition of leading business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Partnership for a New American Economy, American Farm Bureau Federation, Business Roundtable, AmericanHort, Western Growers, and the National Association of Manufacturers launched a Day of Action for immigration reform. These compelling business voices are best positioned to speak on why immigration reform is in our national interest: we need changes to our immigration laws in order to drive job creation and economic growth for our country.

Despite a stalemate in Washington, business leaders are more united than ever, and we are not giving up on the importance of fixing this problem. We join today to deliver the message to the administration and Members of Congress that immigration reform is an economic imperative. In order to drive this message home, we are coordinating a Washington, D.C. national press conference with events in more than 60 congressional districts in 25 states – all in a single day.

Today’s national press conference highlights leading business association CEOs talking about the need for reform. The in-district events features state and local employer associations, state farm bureaus, local businesses and industry leaders. The goal is visible activity across the country, including, among other states, Arkansas, California, Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The coordinated events aim to show that across industries, sectors, and geographies the business community needs our immigration laws to be modernized.
